Meet Mark Rose

What is your role at Avison Young?

Chairman & CEO of Avison Young.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

I entered public accounting after graduating from Queens College, City University of New York. Having worked on major real estate clients from a tax and accounting perspective, I followed a colleague to British Coal Pension Fund's REIT in the US and ultimately became a 26 year old CEO.

Who has been the most influential woman in your life?

My mother-in-law. Easy to pick my wife who has supported me throughout my career, but the wisdom of my mother-in-law to discuss challenges and unhappiness and reframe them to what you can do about it going forward was priceless. She also influenced my approach to kindness and empathy.

What advice would you give women starting out in real estate?

The same advice would give to any person. Be yourself, work harder than anyone else, listen more than you speak. Get involved with putting your imprint your company's culture and strategy. Raise your hand to contribute and don't be afraid to let leadership know if they are veering off execution, strategy or culture.

This year's IWD theme is Choose to Challenge. What do you choose to challenge or celebrate to help create more inclusion in your community?

I choose to honor women's triumphs and challenges. Tell the stories about how women make a difference and inspire all (men & women) to take on difficult issues and change people's lives.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

My female therapists have helped me to deal with a severe stuttering problem as a child and help me today to overcome anxiety and depression.

What women’s organizations would you recommend other women get involved with?

AY Women's Network, CREW, Charitable organizations that take on women's issues. Political committees that take on women's issues.
