Meet Joan Skelton

What is your role at Avison Young?

Global Lead for Diversity & Inclusion.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

I started in the niche area of data center real estate ten years ago but over the years migrated into corporate positions within the areas of marketing, HR and D&I.

Who has been the most influential woman in your life?

The most influential woman in my early life would be my mother, but at this point I would say my daughters. They are so insightful and wise beyond their years; they call me out on a regular basis for anything they think I can improve upon, which is a lot!!

What advice would you give women starting out in real estate?

Find great mentors and put effort into cultivating those relationships. The benefits of a great mentoring relationship are immeasurable, typically for both parties, and often is the differentiator in a successful career. Even more powerful is developing a sponsor relationship, someone who will not only provide guidance for you along your career journey but will be an advocate for you within the company.

This year's IWD theme is Choose to Challenge. What do you choose to challenge or celebrate to help create more inclusion in your community?

I Choose to Challenge myself to use the platform I have within AY to shine the spotlight on as many women as possible, providing opportunities to share their insights and stories to reinforce all our voices are equal -regardless of age, position, background or any demographic.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I hold two technology patents but struggle to share my screen on a zoom call! Go figure:-)

What women’s organizations would you recommend other women get involved with?

First and foremost, I would recommend all the women of AY to join our Women's Network. We have made a concerted effort to develop programming that benefits not just all women, but all people within the company which is why we encourage men to join as well. I Choose to Challenge you all to join and make the Women's Network even better with your input and participation!
