Meet Kate Green

What is your role at Avison Young?

Associate - I provide a wide range of advice for clients in the public and private sectors involving the preparation of major planning applications and the promotion of strategic sites through emerging local plans and neighbourhood development plans.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

I wanted to do geography at university and when I was looking at courses and where I might want to go, my brother suggested I look at specialising as early as I could. I started doing some digging and stumbled across planning and the relevant accredited degrees. My brother's advice, together with a keen interest in how places are created and the way they work for the people that use them resulted in a slight change in tack!

What advice would you give women starting out in real estate?

Get stuck in and say yes to every opportunity! The best feeling of success often comes from doing the things that takes us out of our comfort zone. Admittedly, it sometimes doesn't always feel great when you're going through it, but you almost certainly will when you come out the other side!

This year's IWD theme is Choose to Challenge. What do you choose to challenge or celebrate to help create more inclusion in your community?

This year, I'm choosing to challenge language. This might seem like a fairly odd one at first glance, but simply, I hope we can get to a position where we don't have to define the difference between "leaders" and "female leaders", for example. Instead, I hope we can get to a place where we can all just be leaders in our own right. In my view this extends across the LGBTQ+ community as well.

What women’s organizations would you recommend other women get involved with?

Women in Planning.

This year, I'm choosing to challenge language.
