Meet Jayne McColl

What is your role at Avison Young?

Principal & Global Chief of Staff.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

I started as a receptionist at a small property management firm; we had a broker open house and I met the managing director from the local Colliers office. We became friends and eventually he asked me to join as the operations director. The decision to take that job opportunity was a springboard for my career. He is still a mentor today.

What advice would you give women starting out in real estate?

Be smart, be assertive, be tough, be confident, be yourself. Believe in yourself. Listen, participate and remember to be kind.

What women’s organizations would you recommend other women get involved with?

AY Women's Network and CREW. I spent time on the local NAIOP chapter board of directors, it was a great opportunity to get to know people in our industry. Volunteer with industry organizations.
