Shaftesbury Theatre Flytower

  • Location: London, UK

The Shaftesbury Theatre is owned by the Theatre of Comedy Company and is the largest independently owned West End theatre. The theatre, designed by notable theatre architect Bertie Crewes was built over 100 years ago in 1911, and by modern standards was limited by its structural capacity.

The completed project has provided this 1,400 seat Grade II listed building with an iconic new stage roof and a new technical grid with much improved scenery hanging capacity.

The project also provided much needed additional dressing rooms and office space.

To minimize loss of income the works were split into three phases.

Phase 1 comprising the piling and refurbishment with access improvements to sub-stage technical areas was completed between production slots in March 2013.

Phase 2 comprising the installation of structural steelwork within the stage-house and was completed between production slots in September 2013.

Phase 3 comprised external works above the existing roof and was carried out whilst performances continue below and was completed in 2016.

The scheme won the ‘Culture and Community Award’ at the New London Architecture Awards in July 2016, and received a Commendation at the BCI Awards 2016 and the Blueprint Awards 2016.
