Library of Birmingham

  • Localisation: Birmingham, UK

The Library of Birmingham is a collaborative development between Birmingham City Council and Birmingham Repertory Theatre (The REP) that will deliver a state-of-the-art destination for knowledge, learning and culture.

It is major transformational project that will support social and economic regeneration in Birmingham and the West Midlands region for generations to come, raising the City’s international profile, and playing a vital role in developing Birmingham’s knowledge-based economy.

As the first tangible development to emerge from the Big City Plan, the Library will provide a catalyst for wider regeneration in the City’s Westside.

It will replace the current Central Library, the largest and busiest public library in Europe, with a new state-of-the-art centre for knowledge, learning and culture fit for the 21st Century.

Designed by award-winning Dutch architects, Mecanoo, the Library of Birmingham has a distinctive design with the potential to become a widely recognised symbol of Birmingham.

We were appointed by Mecanoo to provide expert planning advice to the design team and their client, Birmingham City Council.

This involved directing and co-ordinating the preparation of a detailed planning application supported by an Environmental Statement.

We also led all pre-application planning consultation activities, including a 4 week public exhibition at the end of RIBA Stage C.
