James joined the Avison Young investment sales team in 2004, bringing with him an accomplished and broad background. His career in commercial real estate began in the early 1990s, and since that time James has become one of the most well known and respected investment brokers in Canada. Through his extensive and trusted relationships cultivated with investors around the world–both institutional and private, small to large in scale–together with his extremely diligent underwriting expertise and understanding of the real estate investment and capital markets developed over his nearly 20-year career, James has evolved to become a leading force in the Canadian commercial investment real estate industry. James rapidly excelled his way to the top at Avison Young, recognized by his peers in earning Avison Young’s national “Top Producer of the Year” award in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Admired for his innate ability to conquer goals and deliver results, James demonstrates strong leadership with a virtually unrivaled level of tenacity and perseverance–at times known for accomplishing the unthinkable. Today, James heads the Calgary Investment Team at Avison Young, and is an active member of the company’s national Capital Markets senior leadership group. A seasoned and regular traveler meeting with clients in all major markets across Canada, James has also developed relationships with, and transacted on behalf of, a number of European investors, including a particular emphasis on some of the world’s largest open-ended commercial real estate investment funds based in Germany, as well as German-based private equity. Domestically, James played a major role in the mid-2000s brokering the sale of over $180M of commercial assets in Western Canada to what was then a start-up REIT, now one of Canada’s most widely-known and strongest performing REITs with a portfolio of over 10M square feet and a market cap in excess of $775M. Since joining Avison Young in 2004, James has been the lead brokerage advisor on several billions of dollars worth of real estate transaction activities, acting on behalf of vendors and purchasers alike, from local and foreign private families to billion-dollar-plus global institutional investment funds. Prior to joining Avison Young, James completed several advisory assignments including a $300M portfolio sale between a private development company to a REIT for a national portfolio of power retail centres. In addition to his former role as Vice President and top producer in an international brokerage firm, James has assembled numerous private partnerships over the years for the acquisition, operation, redevelopment and disposition of commercial and multi-residential assets across North America.
